"Your baby is such a wild child! She never seems to calm down until she's practically exhausted." "He keeps waking up! He should be able to sleep through the night by now." "That kid of yours throws such tantrums! She's so aggressive and rude too. Worst case of the 'Terrible two's' I've ever seen!" "He won't focus on anything, not even his favorite cartoon, for more than a minute or two. How's he going to learn anything in school?" "She ought to be able to dress himself by now. She still can't button a shirt or tie her shoes." He wants to play basketball, but he can't even dribble and walk at the same time no matter how much he practices." "Your daughter is not making any friends in school because she's such a bully." "We're recommending self-contained special ed for your son. Have your considered seeing a doctor? There are some medications that may help." "If your kid keeps getting in trouble like this, she's going to wind up in juvenile hall. Get a handle on her!"
Does any of this sound familiar to you? If so, you may be the parent, grandparent or other legal guardian of a hyperactive child. Maybe the 'experts' have even labeled your child with one of the 'Learning Challenged' disorders like ADHD, ADD, or LD, even though your child has a normal or even above normal I.Q. Maybe you've even tried putting your child on prescription drugs only to find that they just make him or her act like a morose, sleepy zombie which is just as bad as being hyper. Worse yet, your child may have suffered some of the side-effects of these drugs.
You are probably wondering what really causes this behavior. Maybe you even have been accused (or blamed yourself) of being a 'bad parent'. Chances are that your child is suffering from hyperkinesis, a non-inherited, physical condition that can usually be treated with applied kinesiology, herbal supplements and changes in diet.
There are three basic causes of hyperkinesis: neurologic disorganization, blood sugar handling stress and food additives. Let's take a look a each of these causes and how applied kinesiology can help treat them without resorting to prescription drugs.
Neurologic Disorganization:
As children grow, their bodies go through several stages of nervous system development. Among them are bilaterality (the ability of both sides of the brain and the body to work together), and left or right dominance (which results in the child becoming left or right handed). In some cases, these stages do not proceed as quickly or as completely as they should resulting in various forms of confusion and uncoordination. In other cases, the development of the nervous system can be disrupted by a physical injury or severe illness.
Sometimes, this neurologic disorganization is obvious, as when a child has trouble walking, running, or catching and throwing objects with precision for a longer time than normal. Other times, it is not so obvious as when a child is having trouble learning to read, doing mental math or even following instructions. In each case, some part of the nervous system is not functioning properly for the brain and body to behave as they should.
Nerve conditions like this can often be reduced and even reversed using chiropractic and kinesiologic techniques in addition to recommended exercises and changes in diet. You should consult a physician who takes a holistic approach to health care and who is experienced in chiropractic and kinesiologic techniques to see if your child is experiencing neurologic disorganization.
Blood Sugar Handling Stress:
While diabetes is a well known disorder related to blood sugar, it is possible for people to have difficulty with handling their blood sugar level without having this disease. Blood sugar levels rise when food of any kind is consumed and fall when physical or mental activity occurs. Consuming more sugar, sugar substitutes and carbohydrates than the body can properly process can stress the glands and organs responsible for maintaining optimal blood sugar levels. Since the nervous system, especially the brain, is severly affected by abnormally high or low blood sugar levels, problems with blood sugar handling stress, even disorders less severe than diabetes, can cause all of the symptoms we associate with disorders like ADD and ADHD.
A holistic physician can determine if your child is experiencing blood sugar handling stress. He or she can use applied kinesiology, herbal supplements and recommended changes in diet to regain proper functioning of your child's glands and organs. This will bring blood sugar levels back into balance.
Food Additives:
Ever since World War II, we have been consuming more and more processed and packaged foods. These foods are convenient and less expensive than buying unprocessed foods, but the downside is that they are full of artificial food additives. Some children (and adults for that matter) are very sensitive to certain food additives. Artificial food colorings and preservatives are often found to be associated with hyperkinesis. These chemicals actually interfere with proper functioning of the nervous system in everyone, but some people are more susceptible to observable side effects from this than others.
A holistic physician can test your child for sensitivity to artificial food colorings and preservatives. Those skilled in Applied Kinesiology can even perform tests without using scrapers or needles. If the cause of hyperkinesis in your child is found to be caused by one or more of these additives, favorable results can be achieved surprisingly quickly by simply making changes in the child's diet. Usually, these dietary changes are necessary for life and hyperkinetic symptoms will return if your child 'cheats' on the diet. Fortunately, more consumers and companies are beginning to realize the negative effects of artificial food additives. As a result, more and more products with no or at least reduced artificial food additives are being put on the market at affordable prices than in the past. However, you still need to read the labels to make sure you are finding products that do not contain the additives your child is sensitive to.
Before you begin (or continue) to put your child on any prescription drugs for ADD, ADHD or any other disorder related to hyperactivity, learning disabilities or even physical coordination issues, consult a holistic physician who specializes in chiropractic and applied kinesiology. You may find that you are not the parent of a 'wild child'. Just a child whose nervous system needs some help in developing well.
The author, John Enfield, is a patient of Dr. David B. Cohen, D.C. He has benefited greatly from chiropractic and applied kinesiology treatments and wants everyone to know the benefits of such a holistic approach to wellness.
John's wife is a public school kindergarten teacher who also has many years of experience teaching children with learning disabilities. She has observed great improvement in children who have been treated with herbal supplements, dietary changes and kinesiology techniques.
